GMDSS - Short Range Certificate

Marine DSC - VHF Radio

This is a one day course for leisure and certain commercial users to obtain the legally required certificate of competence and authority to operate a marine DSC - VHF radio.

No previous experience is required, however a working knowledge of the standard phonetic alphabet is a necessity.  Candidates should obtain the following book from the RYA prior to the course:

The course covers licensing requirements, EPIRB's, SART, all aspects of radio operation and practical use of Icom DSC marine radios.

Your instructor / assessor for the day will be Colin who in addition to having been to sea professionally has maintained an interest in radio communications and has held an amateur radio licence for nearly thirty years.  Additionally he is a regular contributor to the UK's leading amateur radio publication; Practical Wireless.  Therefore in addition to using marine radio professionally Colin has a technical background.

Colin is also a former Commodore of St Andrews Sailing Club.
